Default sharepoint farm

Dear

When installing a Sharepoint Farm installation:

· What are the different types of servers defined (Db Server,Web Application server,Front End Server…) what is the real difference for those servers.
· After installing this architecture, let’s suppose we want to install a SharePoint Feature, on which one of the above servers should we install it (or all maybe?)
· If we create a Sharepoint Job (SPJobDefinition), should we install it on all servers or on only one, and in case we install it on different servers at the same time, will those jobdefinitions perform the same jobs at the same time?
Thanks,

Hi;

I will do my best to answer your questions. However I am new to SharePoint myself so forgive me if I am wrong or have missunderstood.

When installing a Sharepoint Farm installation:
· What are the different types of servers defined (Db Server,Web Application server,Front End Server…) what is the real difference for those servers.
- Db server - Database server this holds the database which contains the sharepoint data.
- Web front end (WFE) server is where the sites are managed.
-Indexing server is the server that indexes the contents of the database
All roles can be done by just one physical server its entirely up to the person setting it up, however in large deployments with a lot of data it makes sense to separate out these roles for perfomance reason.

The WFE server is the only place you will be doing anything. When you install a feature you will install it to this server using STSADM. Once installed this feature can be enabled / disabled from Central Admin.

Installing or Uninstalling Features

Default Wfe

Here is my 2 cents.

When installing your web front end servers you have the choice of a complete install or just WFE.
I would recommend you always do a complete install. If you need to run additional services (form services, etc) you will need the complete install of sharepoint. The WFE option just host content. You won't be able to move any services to that server. like search.
If you ever need to move a service to the WFE you would have to uninstall the WFE sharepoint and do a complete installation.
